Medicare  Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are different from Medicare Supplement plans in that they usually have co-pays, deductibles, and co-insurances similar to traditional Health Insurance. They also typically have a limited provider network.

They are different from county to county, with different pricing and features. Some areas, in particular the metropolitan areas around Nashville TN, Knoxville TN, Chattanooga TN, have specific plans to their area that are a wonderful alternative to traditional Medicare with a Medicare Supplement.

Most Medicare Advantage plans also include the prescription drug coverage benefit found in part D, and have lower cost, with the difference being the limited network and copayments that are typically higher than in a traditional Medicare Supplement.

HMO

HMO plans have a defined network of providers, and require use of in network doctors. They typically include prescription coverage and have very inexpensive copays. HMO plans cannot be used with a separate part D.

PPO

PPO plans allow out of network use if a doctor will accept them, have higher premiums than HMO's in general, and generally include drug coverage. PPO plans cannot be used with a separate Part D.

PFFS

PFFS plans allow use of any doctor that will accept them as coverage, have higher premiums in general, and can include drug coverage. PFFS plans can use a standalone part D coverage, as long as the plan does not have drug coverage built in.

Under 65

One of the other advantages of Medicare Advantage plans is that they are offered to all ages, not just 65 and above. This makes them very attractive to people under 65 who do not have significant medical expenses, as the premiums of a Medicare Supplement tend to be much higher for that age group, but Medicare Advantage premiums are the same for any age.

Want to hear specifics?

The law prevents me from posting specific information about Medicare Advantage plans online without getting express approval from each carrier and from the federal government on each page. Since the plans change usually every year, and we represent several different companies, it would be very difficult if not impossible to get all the pages updated, then obtain approval, make necessary changes, and get all of the carriers to agree on our copy of the data. It is also not legal to compare them side by side, because of regulations of Center for Medicare Services, a division of Health and Human Services. I would love to be able to do this, but we are restricted from it because of the law. If you would like to see the different plans in your area, please ask and we can give you the information if it is requested.
